Imagine popping candy fizzing on your tongue during a spin on a waltzers ride on Mars, and you have a smidgen of the essence within 90s electro-pop act Bis.
From the moment they take to the stage, the crowd come under heavy attack from waves of shrieks, synths and disco beats, as Steve, Manda, and John are out to remind us tonight, what camp Bis are all about.
It’s been ten years since the release of their debut album, The New Transistor Heroes, and the band have reformed for three shows in celebration. Any DIY style, Casio pop-punk offerings that have emerged in the last decade have much to thank Bis, (and Helen Love for), but while there are obvious signs of age tonight with the trio close to their thirties now, bright sparks among their set, including ‘Kill Your Boyfriend’, ‘X-Defect’ and ‘Secret Vampires’ proves that the original never fails.
‘Euro Disco’ transforms from a dance floor anthem to a karaoke sing-along, as the audience takes over the song. With their sound swelling out to fill the room, there’s no wonder how this group of Scots created the Powerpuff Girls’ theme tune, (which spurred a Marilyn Manson rendition), as they almost morph into anime characters themselves during their over-zesty performance. Dressed in a pink dolly dress, singer Manda Rin screams sugary sweet as she bounces excitedly behind her keyboard, in-between vocals. The two boys in the band Sci-fi Steve Clark, and John Disco (a.k.a. John Clark), are equally energetic, moving about the opposite side of the stage, sharing vocals and switching instruments for various parts of the show.
United for one last high pitch shout, band and crowd merge for their renowned 1996 hit ‘Kandy Pop’. And as the chaotic yet blissful pop fades, you find yourself back on those intergalactic waltzers, struggling to stop and come back down to Earth.
