The Films – ‘Belt Loops’

The Films hail from South Carolina and are a poppier and bouncier version of the Libertines. So they’re probably the first US band to claim the Libs as an influence. Good or bad? Judging from this single, the follow-up to ‘Black Shoes’, their idolation of the narcotics-numpty is no bad thing, as this is a slice of fantastically spikey, rambunctious indie rawk.

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”, warns the adage. Well Michael Trent spits scorn and sarcasm faster than a shat-upon high school jock. Subject matter is a girlfriend’s infidelity, which after some fuzzy intro-riffage is explained thus:
She’s like a devil in a dark shade of lipstick / An unassuming sort of x-rated misfit”.

The Doherty/Paddingtons clones swipes are clearly doing the Films no favours, nor does the inclusion of a gawd-awful version of the Ramones’ ‘Blitzkrieg Pop’ on this release. However, If the Southern quartet can continue to thrash out tunes like ‘Belt Loops’ they may escape the ‘establishing themselves phase’ with just the usual NME hype.
